Despite injury, Troy Polamalu rises to occasion for Steelers

PITTSBURGH — Those measured steps Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu takes on his sore left Achilles reveals a mix of grinning and grimacing, with the former outweighing the latter because he's on the doorstep of another championship in spite of the aches.
  • Troy Polamalu led the Pittsburgh Steelers with seven interceptions on the season and a plethora of other big plays that helped get his team to Super Bowl XLV. "He sees the game a little differently," coach Mike Tomlin says. "That's what makes him special."

Make no mistake, this is no small matter. Polamalu estimates that it has bothered him for more than two months, causing him to miss two games in December — a loss to the New York Jets and a win over the Carolina Panthers— as well as two practices last week alone.
He's taking a wait-and-see approach regarding postseason surgery, but for now he's handling the injury like anyone with a chronic ailment — on a day-to-day basis. Judging from the smile on his face after Friday's workout, this day was better than others.
"I'm just used to the pain that you deal with," said the six-time Pro Bowler (excused from Sunday's all-star game as a Super Bowl participant). "I have a good rehab program that's been carrying me through each game. I go through enough pain to be able to play, let's just say that."
