SALT LAKE CITY - The football season is slowly coming to a close, with the Super Bowl only a few weeks away. The question for BYU Cougar fans is, where's Harvey Unga?
"Where's Harvey?" was a slogan that many Utah Utes fans were chanting when the Cougars were struggling earlier in the season.
Unga, the all-time leading rusher at BYU with 3,455 yards, was prepared to play his senior year for the Cougars before being dismissed for violating the school's honor code. Unga decided to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, being selected by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round. The Bears offered Unga a four-year contract for $1.8 million shortly after.
Following Sunday's win against the Seattle Seahawks, the Chicago Bears advanced to the NFC Championship game where they will take on the Green Bay Packers this Sunday.
Unfortunately for Unga, he has not had the opportunity to participate with the team this season after being placed on the Bears' injured reserve list back in August due to an injury to his right hamstring in training camp.
Before his injury, Unga was competing against Garrett Wolfe and Khalil Bell for a spot in the backfield. He was expected to compete for a role as Chicago's third running back or even a spot as a fullback.
The Bears sacrificed their seventh-round pick in the upcoming April draft to pick up Unga. The Bears obviously saw something in Unga so expect him to be a part of the roster in the 2011 season, pending his recovery from the injury. For now, Unga has a great opportunity to gain some postseason experience while on the sideline.
So where's Harvey?
For now he is still working to stay in the NFL, but it will take another season before his future is determined.
