The Baltimore Ravens officially applied the franchise tag to defensive tackle Haloti Ngata on Tuesday.
The franchise tag designation means Ngata will make the average of the top salaries at his position in 2011. Last year, franchised defensive tackles earned $7 million.

The Ravens would like to lock Ngata up with a long-term contract, as the 6-4, 340-pounder totaled 65 tackles and was second on the team with a career-high 5.5 sacks.
A first-round pick of the Ravens in 2006, Ngata is a two-time Pro Bowler who is one of the league’s top run-stuffers.
