Antoinette “Nora” Fa’atiga enjoys pulling down rebounds on the basketball court, hitting overhead winners in tennis or kicking the soccer ball around. But the Richmond High School senior has a special drive for another sport — volleyball. “I have a passion for playing volleyball. It’s who I am,” said Fa’atiga, a four-year varsity player for the Blue Devils. “I play basketball and tennis for fun. Volleyball is something I’m always working on to get better at.”

Fa’atiga certainly has gotten better since she arrived in Richmond four years ago from American Samoa, a United States territory in the South Pacific.

Her volleyball playing ability and accomplishments have not gone unnoticed.

Fa’atiga, 17, was selected the 2010 Times Herald Player of the Year.

Also considered for the award were Kaitlyn Hoffman and Taylor Cunningham, both of Marysville.

“Nora played middle for us, but she is a true rightside hitter,” Richmond Coach Charlene West said. “In college, she will play rightside, but we needed her to play in the middle.”

“I played in college and have been coaching 20 years, 13 at the varsity level, and Nora is the best athlete and most-talented player I've seen.”
