Roster analysis: The defensive line market
By J.I. Halsell
As the Redskins continue to prepare for offseason free agency, the defensive line is clearly a group in need of an upgrade. Washington's 3-4 defensive linemen as a group accounted for only 8.5 tackles for a loss on the season and generally did not make very many plays.
Clearly, a decision will have to be made on the future of Albert Haynesworth, and according to General Manager Bruce Allen, there's at least a chance the defensive lineman returns in 2011.
If the Redskins are indeed shopping Haynesworth on the trade market, however, he has a contract that is very tradeable. He has no guaranteed money remaining on the deal and only $12 million in salary over 2011 and 2012 before a $20 million bonus in 2013 makes the deal prohibitive.
Here's a look at the crop of 3-4 defensive linemen set to become free agents, headed by Ravens Pro Bowl defensive tackle Haloti Ngata:
Alan Branch (26), Cardinals
Haloti Ngata (27), Ravens
Marcus Thomas (25), Broncos
Kevin Vickerson (28), Broncos
Cullen Jenkins (30), Packers
Tony McDaniel (26), Dolphins
Paul Soliai (27), Dolphins
Shaun Ellis (33), Jets
Aubrayo Franklin (30), 49ers
