Mira Costa High defensive lineman J.R. Tavai was selected All-CIF and the defensive player of the year for the second year in a row Thursday.
Three other Mustangs made the team in one of the toughest divisions in Southern California.
“I really just wanted to go out and win games and get a scholarship this season.  It’s great to be honored with some of the best players in our area,” said Tavai, who was the top defensive player in the Northern Division this season, the Western Division last season and next week will sign a national letter of intent with USC.
Joining Tavai on the All-CIF team is offensive guard Brett Darragh, linebacker Derek Largent and kicker Brendan Sofen.
Earlier this year, Tavai was selected as the most valuable player in the Bay League and Largent won defensive MVP honors.
“It’s pretty incredible for me, based on the fact I didn’t go into the season thinking I would get any recognition with it being my first year starting,” Largent said.
